About the time the flames started licking at her feet, Alice began having regrets about volunteering for audience participation at the Ren Faire witch trial…
Heyyyyy Bronc, I can’t hide your comment due to low comment rating. What, just cause you own the site you can play by a different set of rules? Sup brah?
How horrific! The article is very disturbing (an understatement) and I intentionally did not look at the photo, however, the whole sordid affair begs the question: did she weigh as much as a duck?
Not necessarily. People are terrified of sorcery in PNG – with good reason. They extremely superstitious – sorcery is used as a weapon in tribal disputes – and there have been several recent cases of human sacrifice and cannibalism associated with sorcery. (The average PNG citizen looks on human sacrifice and cannibalism with the same disgust you do.)
As ludicrous as it sounds to us, they believed a child had been murdered by a witch. If your child was murdered, you might do something awful if the person you thought was responsible was in your power. I’m not sure I wouldn’t.
By the way, what they believed in no way justifies what they did to this poor woman. Violence against women in PNG is horrific, especially in Port Moresby where this incident occurred. I believe the rural areas are more civlised.

People are so touchy.
I’m just surprised that more people hate the Ren Faire comment than my other one. I thought my first attempt was a lot more innocuous.
People are really territorial about their stupid Ren Faires, for reasons which escape me.

My comment up there got hidden. It needs to have at least three thumbs down to be hidden. I thought you’d be used to that by now.

Black comedy is the only way I can get through stories like this. Because this story is truly horrifying and utterly depressing.
I think I’m going to be sick.
I bet, deep down, these people just wanted to kill somebody, anybody, and the “witch” thing was just an excuse.

Well, she turned me into a newt!
…I got better.
